Game Designer (Balance and Economy)

Remote

Jobs requirements

We are currently looking for a Game Designer (Balance and Economy) to join our Cross Project team.

The Cross Project team works across several Nekki projects instead of sitting inside a single one. This role is part of the meta and monetization group, which is reworking the economies of our existing games. You move between projects, going deep into the economy of each one, and work directly with the Head of Monetization.

Responsibilities:

  • Break down the existing economy of a project, collect and structure its parameters.
  • Build economy models in spreadsheets.
  • Calculate progression, resource sources and sinks, the cost of in-game entities, and the pace at which players obtain them.
  • Find imbalances and report the problems you uncover.
  • Model changes, prepare new versions of the economy, and recalculate when the inputs change.
  • Discuss solutions with the Head of Monetization.
  • Build your own tools when a task calls for them.
  • Later on, work with analytics to validate your models against real player data.

What we are looking for:

  • The ability to build, calculate, and recalculate game economies: resource sources and sinks, the cost of progression, accumulation rates, upgrades, rewards, and so on.
  • A good understanding of basic math. Advanced higher math is not required.
  • Attention to detail, patience, and accuracy when working with large tables and a large number of interconnected parameters.
  • Logical thinking and the ability to check your results against common sense: to notice contradictions, anomalous values, and errors in models.
  • The ability to figure out a system on your own, and to understand not just what a formula returns but why it returns that value.
  • The habit of reporting the vulnerabilities and problems you find instead of keeping them to yourself.
  • The ability to work with analytics for self-checking, either doing it yourself or setting the right tasks for verification.
  • No fear of AI tools, along with the ability to apply them in your work or the willingness to learn them.
  • The ability to create your own tools to solve your tasks.
  • Experience in game development.

What would be a plus:

  • Experience with games with a complex, multi-layered economy: 4X, RPG, strategy, battlers, midcore and live service projects, and others with a lot of resources, progression, and interconnected systems.
  • Experience working with configs and analytics.
